Toilet Paper vs Kitchen Roll vs Tissues: What's Actually the Difference?

At first glance, toilet paper, kitchen roll and tissues look like variations on the same thing - soft, white(ish), sold on a roll or in a box. So when you run out of one, it's tempting to just grab another. But each of these products is engineered for a very different job, and using the wrong one can cost you more in the long run, or simply not do the job properly.

Here at Tiboo, we make all three from 100% bamboo, so we get asked this a lot: "what's the actual difference?" Here's the simple, honest answer.

The short answer

Toilet paper Kitchen roll Tissues

Strength when wet Low (by design) High Low to medium
Absorbency Low Very high Low to medium
Texture Soft, thin layers Thick, textured Extra soft, sometimes lotion-infused

Common Misconceptions About Bamboo Products
Bamboo Toilet Tissue

What makes toilet paper different

Toilet paper has one job most people don’t think about: falling apart. It’s designed to break down quickly in water so it clears your pipes and doesn’t cause blockages, whether you’re on mains sewerage or a septic system. That’s why it’s made from shorter, looser paper fibres that separate easily once wet.

This is also where the material it’s made from really matters. Our Premium Bamboo Toilet Rolls use bamboo fibre, which is naturally soft, strong on the roll, and just as quick to break down once flushed – so you’re not trading softness for septic safety. If you prefer an alternative fibre, our sugarcane toilet rolls offer the same dissolve-fast, flush-safe design.

What to look for: softness, ply count, and how quickly it disintegrates – not how absorbent it is. Absorbency is the wrong metric for toilet paper.

What makes kitchen roll different

Kitchen roll is built to do the opposite of toilet paper: stay strong and hold together when soaked. It needs to soak up spills, grease and liquid without falling apart in your hand, which is why it’s made from longer, more tightly bonded fibres – often with a quilted or embossed texture to increase surface area and absorbency.

This is exactly why kitchen roll should never go down the toilet. The same strength that makes it great at the sink means it doesn’t break down in water, and it can cause blockages in pipes or septic systems.

Our bamboo kitchen rolls are made to be genuinely tough – strong enough for grease, spills and general kitchen clean-up – while still being 100% plastic-free and better for the planet than standard wood-pulp rolls.

What to look for: ply count, wet strength, and sheet size. A good bamboo kitchen roll should hold up to a proper soaking without shredding.

What makes tissues different

Tissues sit in the middle: soft like toilet paper, but designed for a single quick use on your face or hands rather than repeated wiping or flushing. They’re usually the softest of the three, sometimes with added lotion for sensitive noses and skin, and they’re built for gentleness over strength or absorbency.

Because tissues are so fine, they’re not suitable for flushing either – they don’t have the same rapid breakdown design as toilet paper, and can still contribute to blockages.

Our bamboo tissues are naturally hypoallergenic and gentle, which matters if you’re prone to a sore nose during cold and hay fever season – no synthetic softeners needed, just the natural softness of the bamboo fibre.

Can you use kitchen roll as toilet paper (or vice versa)?

In an emergency, sure – it won’t hurt you. But:

  • Don’t flush kitchen roll or tissues. They’re not designed to break down and can cause blockages, especially if you’re on a septic system.
  • Toilet paper won’t hold up to kitchen spills. It’s too thin and falls apart too easily to do a proper wiping job.
  • Tissues aren’t a substitute for either, long-term – they’re not cost-effective in bulk and aren’t made for repeated wiping.

Using the right product for the right job isn’t just about performance – it protects your plumbing and keeps your household running smoothly.

Why bamboo, across all three?

Whichever of the three you’re reaching for, bamboo is worth choosing over standard wood-pulp paper:

  • Naturally soft and strong – no need for harsh chemical processing to get a good feel
  • Hypoallergenic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial by nature, which is gentler on sensitive skin
  • Fast-growing and renewable – bamboo can be harvested without replanting, unlike trees
  • Plastic-free – every Tiboo product, from our bamboo toilet tissue to our kitchen rolls, is completely plastic-free
  • Panda-safe – our bamboo is sourced responsibly and doesn’t come from panda habitats

It’s why we make flushable moist bamboo toilet tissue too, for when regular toilet roll alone isn’t quite enough – same septic-safe, quick-break-down design, with a bit of extra freshness.

The bottom line

Toilet paper, kitchen roll and tissues aren’t interchangeable – each is engineered for a different balance of softness, strength and absorbency. Toilet paper needs to dissolve fast, kitchen roll needs to hold up wet, and tissues need to be gentle on skin. Choosing the right one (and the right material) means less mess, fewer plumbing problems, and a lighter footprint on the planet.

FAQs

Is bamboo toilet paper better than regular toilet paper?

Bamboo toilet paper is naturally soft, strong and hypoallergenic without needing heavy chemical processing. It also grows faster and more sustainably than the trees used for standard toilet paper, making it a better choice for both your skin and the environment.

Can I flush bamboo toilet paper?

Yes. Bamboo toilet paper is designed to dissolve quickly in water, just like standard toilet paper, so it’s safe to flush and suitable for septic tanks and modern sewerage systems.

Can you use kitchen roll instead of toilet paper?

You can in an emergency, but you shouldn’t flush it. Kitchen roll is designed to stay strong when wet, so it doesn’t break down in pipes the way toilet paper does, and can cause blockages.

Why is kitchen roll more absorbent than toilet paper?

Kitchen roll uses longer, more tightly bonded fibres and is often quilted or embossed to increase its surface area. This makes it much better at soaking up spills and grease, but it’s also why it doesn’t dissolve in water like toilet paper does.

Are tissues the same as toilet paper?

No. Tissues are made to be extra soft for a single gentle use on your face, while toilet paper is engineered to dissolve quickly for flushing. Tissues shouldn’t be flushed as they don’t break down the same way.

Is bamboo kitchen roll as strong as normal kitchen roll?

Yes. Bamboo fibre is naturally strong, and our bamboo kitchen rolls are made to hold up to everyday spills and grease just as well as standard wood-pulp kitchen roll, without the plastic packaging.

What does panda-safe bamboo mean?

It means the bamboo used isn’t sourced from panda habitats or forests pandas rely on for food. Tiboo bamboo is grown and harvested responsibly, so you can use our products without any impact on panda populations.
