At first glance, toilet paper, kitchen roll and tissues look like variations on the same thing - soft, white(ish), sold on a roll or in a box. So when you run out of one, it's tempting to just grab another. But each of these products is engineered for a very different job, and using the wrong one can cost you more in the long run, or simply not do the job properly.

What makes toilet paper different
Toilet paper has one job most people don't think about: falling apart. It's designed to break down quickly in water so it clears your pipes and doesn't cause blockages, whether you're on mains sewerage or a septic system. That's why it's made from shorter, looser paper fibres that separate easily once wet.
This is also where the material it's made from really matters. What to look for: softness, ply count, and how quickly it disintegrates - not how absorbent it is. Absorbency is the wrong metric for toilet paper.
What makes kitchen roll different
Kitchen roll is built to do the opposite of toilet paper: stay strong and hold together when soaked. It needs to soak up spills, grease and liquid without falling apart in your hand, which is why it's made from longer, more tightly bonded fibres - often with a quilted or embossed texture to increase surface area and absorbency.
This is exactly why kitchen roll should never go down the toilet. The same strength that makes it great at the sink means it doesn't break down in water, and it can cause blockages in pipes or septic systems.

They're usually the softest of the three, sometimes with added lotion for sensitive noses and skin, and they're built for gentleness over strength or absorbency.
Because tissues are so fine, they're not suitable for flushing either - they don't have the same rapid breakdown design as toilet paper, and can still contribute to blockages.
